After many months of work your academic research has been brought together in a research paper. You may be ready to submit it to a journal, or your submission may have been returned with peer reviewers' comments and a requirement to improve the English.

I am a Professional Member of the UK's Chartered Institute for Editing and Proofreading (CIEP).
I am trained in copyediting and proofreading and have both CIEP and Publishing Training Centre qualifications. Starting out as a Humanities graduate (Latin, BA Hons) I had a career working for medical academics before turning to freelance editing in 2017. I am a native English speaker. I am signed up to the CIEP Code of Practice. |
Your aimsYour academic department depends upon your research being published in the most appropriate journal(s) and reaching its target audience. Your academic paper might benefit from wide dissemination, helping to attract funding for the continuation of important research.
You need an approachable and efficient editing professional who will adhere to your target journal’s style requirements, agree mutually convenient working methods with you and provide a clear estimate of scope, timescale and cost at the outset. |

Working with meI will usually ask for a sample section from your academic paper to prepare my estimate. I will asses how much editing is required and will ask you for the style guide of the publication or journal to which you will (re)submit the article. You will find me efficient and courteous, clear and prompt.
It is my job to make sure that nothing inconsistent or grammatically wrong has crept in. We are all human, however talented, and minor oversights are made by the most highly qualified and proficient authors and academics. It interests me that the best writers are sometimes those who imagine that they are not. Even in academic writing the author’s ‘voice’ must be heard. I am accustomed to editing multi-authored texts, liaising with joint editors, handling large numbers of illustrations and communicating with authors in different time zones. A summary of my services is available here as a pdf. |

Further considerations |
If you think the wording in your academic paper needs a great deal of reworking you might need to consider whether you require copyediting or substantive (developmental, or heavy) editing. Please note that the job might cost more if a heavier edit is needed to bring the research paper to a reputable standard. I can discuss all this with you at the outset.
Another option relates to the stage the research paper has reached, i.e. will it be edited further after I have worked on it, for instance, by an academic colleague? I can offer a further round of copyediting at the end, right before submission, to ensure consistency. Academics are usually very helpful in responding to editing queries promptly so that the deadline can be met. This helps the job go smoothly. |
